Walter Langley

Walter Langley (1852-1922) was an English painter of the Newlyn School. His main subject matter was life in English coastal fishing villages. A common theme in his paintings is the stress experienced by fishermen's wives when their men were away at sea, due to the danger of their occupation.

 Between the Tides (1901)

 In the Fishing Season

 On the Quay, Newlyn

 The Breadwinners (1886)

 The New Arrival

 The Orphan (1889)

 Thoughts Far Away

 Waiting for the Boats (1885)
[this painting is one of the best character studies I've ever seen]

When the Boats are Away (1903)
